Does summer = stress for some parents?

What’s not to like about summer?  With the great weather, BBQ’s, water fun and a little time off, it’s one of the best times of the year!  As great as summer is, it is also marks a significant challenge for parents: What do we do with the kids?  For working parents, it’s even more so, since balancing work and play is critical.

Most schools and daycares take some time off to allow their staff some well-deserved vacation.  Some schools and daycares are closed completely from June to September. So, does that mean parents need to take all that time off too?

Being a parent of two young children, it’s particularly challenging for me to balance the summer fun and keep to my work schedule to meet the demands of my job.  “Creative vacationing” is what we’d like to call it in our family.  I’ve divided up my vacation days with my husband – 2 days a week here, 3 days a week there – and between the two of us we are able to fill the void.  Both our employers are very supportive and allow us the flexibility in our schedules as well – an added bonus and tremendous help.  So now, we can enjoy the summer with our kids without worrying about our work.

How do you work through the summer months and still enjoy time with your kids?  How does your workplace support you and your family?  We invite you to share your stories.
