What is Success By 6?

I was out watching the fireworks with friends and friends of friends the other night and got asked for the gazillionth time, “What is Success By 6?”.

Good question – but not an easy answer.  I’ll try to paint a picture.

Picture people (Success By 6 Coordinators and Aboriginal Coordinators) in communities around BC whose focus is to inspire community members to take an active role in improving supports and services for young children.

Picture people coming together as community coalitions from diverse sectors (public health, education, libraries, Aboriginal bands, city councils, parks and recreation, child care, community services, churches, business, service clubs … and the list goes on) to plan how to best support families with young children.

Picture those people forming partnerships, collaborating on projects, building playgrounds, holding wellness fairs, developing family magazines or directing new funding to areas needed.

Picture all these people and all the projects they undertake contributing to making better the communities they live and work in for families with young children.

Now, picture these young children thriving in their communities who will one day grow up to be caring, contributing citizens themselves.

Success By 6 in BC has:

• 20 regional initiatives that support
• 110 cross sectoral community coalitions that support
• 247 communities across BC and funded
• 450 projects in 2009
