Anonymous Child Care Comments Not the Way to Choose!
Recently I heard a story on the radio about a new website that allows parents to post anonymous reviews about their child care provider.
As an early childhood educator who worked in child care for years this story caused me grave concern. The reality is that most anonymous comments posted on websites tend to be negative.
How can the site ensure that the comments are an accurate reflection of the caregiver's quality of care? Is there the potential for libel?
When parents have a concern about their child's care they should first speak to their caregiver. Often concerns can be resolved through open communication.
If parents do not feel their concerns have been addressed or taken seriously they should speak to the person who manages the centre or they can contact a licensing officer and file a complaint. It will be investigated.
If you are looking for good child care there are better ways to find out about caregivers in your neighbourhood than an anonymous comment. First and foremost, talk to other moms and dads that you know and trust.
And in BC there are Child Care Resource and Referral (CCRR) services throughout the province which can provide parents with a wealth of information and resources about child care.
Your child's care is too important to leave to an anonymous source.
