Discovering More About Full Day Kindergarten
BC has announced that it is going ahead with implementing full day kindergarten and there is a lot of debate about whether this is a good thing.
Having spent my last 32 years as an Early Childhood Education professional, of course I was interested to find out what this would mean for kids.
Early Childhood Educators have been trained to recognize and promote the importance of play based learning. Children learn so much from play and when given the opportunity to explore their world through play, develop the skills they need to enter school.
I wanted to know – was full day kindergarten going to mean that children would now be introduced to more formalized learning at a younger age?
I was encouraged when I heard from Ministry of Education staff that full day kindergarten was not going to be a “downward push of Grade 1” but rather a play based, holistic approach to learning.
The following resources, The Early Learning Framework and Making Linkages, were developed with lots of input from Early Childhood Educators and will guide the implementation of full day kindergarten.
