Does public investment in children 0-6 really benefit everyone?

Welcome to the new Success By 6 BC blog.  We want to inform, engage and inspire people to think about Early Childhood Development (ECD) in a whole new light.

So, does public investment into the early years really benefit everyone?  Lots of people seem to think so.

Nobel Laureate and University of Chicago Economics Professor, James Heckman
States that “investments in children bring a higher rate of return than other
investments.

Daniel Trefler Research Chair in Competitiveness and Prosperity at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, maintains that “kids have been outperforming bonds and equities for the past decade.”  His article, Why Invest in Early Childhood Development?, was featured in the Globe and Mail.

Even business are starting to see the light.  From Credit Unions of BC to Rotary Clubs, and even the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, ECD is increasingly becoming of interest.

And what about you?  What do you think?  Over the next several months, we will be blogging about how public investment in children 0-6 benefits “me”. Join in the dialogue, send us a tweet, comment on our Facebook fan page, or leave a note here, we’d love to hear your thoughts.

Success By 6 in BC is working to raise awareness about the importance of Early Childhood Development and why it matters to you.

Thank you for posting this important question. I love Daniel Trefler's article. Since he highlights the work of Dr. Fraser Mustard and the Council for Early Child Development it would be helpful to provide a link to one of his recent presentations (ie: Cities Fit for Children, Oct 2009)
