Investing in Education Before Age 5
It is widely accepted that once children turn the magic age of five that education becomes a public responsibility. Hardly anyone complains about public spending on education.
And yet, research clearly proves that the most critical years for learning are from conception to age five - where early brain development for future education success is formed. So why is there limited support for public investment in early childhood development?
29% of BC kids are vulnerable entering kindergarten. These children are at risk of learning challenges, are more likely to be teased or bullied, are more likely to need remedial support and less likely to graduate. All costs that society could reduce with good early childhood supports.
Parents are a child’s first teacher. All parents benefit from some support; whether from extended family, friends or community programs.
Programs such as healthy pregnancy, parent drop-in, literacy and child care programs offer the help that parents need. This in turn helps the child. But the funds are limited and there is so much more we could be doing.
Success By 6 helps by funding programs all across BC that support parents to develop positive parenting skills. A good investment towards our education system!
