They Are Our Neighbours
For several years I ran the Nelson Family Place. Some of the people I remember best from those years are the moms who were struggling with a mental illness. Sometimes they were managing the challenges of parenthood just fine. But sometimes their illness caused them great distress and I could see the impact their distress was having on their children.
Parents with a mental illness are not bad parents or bad people. They are our neighbours. They love their children as much as you or I. But frequently they are shunned by their community. Often there is nowhere for them to turn to get the support they need.
Recently the BC government released a ten year plan to address mental health and substance use in BC. I am encouraged to see an emphasis has been placed on early intervention measures with children and youth. But equally important the plan includes supports directed at parents and families.
"Clear evidence exists to show that the provision of formal supports for parents before, during and after the birth of their children contributes to healthy child development and reduces the likelihood of emotional and behavioural problems later in life."
I look forward to watching as this plan is put into action in the months and years ahead.
