Last night I was out walking and I was struck by the number of Dads I saw out with their kids.  It made me think - the times really have changed.

At dinner the other night my grown daughters and I were reflecting on their very complex extended family and the impact they had in their lives. 

My oldest daughter’s Dad died before she was born and we’ve stayed close with his large family.

For several years I ran the Nelson Family Place.

Yesterday I drove from Vancouver to Nelson BC.  What an amazing province we live in!  From the mountain passes, to the clear lakes and rivers, to the beautiful valley as you enter Grand Forks; I drove in awe of the unique characteristics of every region.

I have been a working mom all of my children's lives. Not by choice, but out of necessity.

I couldn't have done it without the support of some really amazing, qualified caregivers, who for years I considered as important as our extended family.

I had a child who did not like to separate from me when I had to go to work.

I chose the best of child care options for her and did my best to prepare her. But all that preparation still didn't help when it came down to dropping her off in the morning.

I have a long history with United Way. Many years ago in Ontario, I was a workplace volunteer, and when I moved to BC, I became a Board member for the Nelson & District United Way. I have also worked for organizations that received funding from the United Way.
