Supporting Children & Families in the Central Coast
Gingerbread Day is an annual event at Healthy Beginnings. Parents, grandparents, guardians and most of all children look forward to it. This year 47 parents and children came to playgroup to join in the fun that included making puppets, listening to the Gingerbread Man story and decorating gingerbread cookies. This event brings us all together in the spirit of Christmas.
The Teddy Bear’s Picnic is growing every year! This year we counted more than 200 parents and children. All of the Early Childhood Educators and service providers in the community come together to make this a fun-filled free day for families. With the new resources of regalia, cedar hats and drums, made with funds from Success By 6, and a donation of paddles, we had traditional singing and dancing.
With the funds from Success By 6 the New Leaf Learning Literacy Center was able to purchase shelves and books for the “Big Red Shelves” to be put in 6 locations to promote literacy and give away free books to children in the community.
The Playgroup at Healthy Beginnings every Friday now has a First Nation Teacher come for a visit and teach the children and parents songs and dances.
Each year our region celebrates Aboriginal Day. The event includes a day of Sports activities. We kick it off with a parade with our local RCMP and Fire Truck leading. The day includes races for all ages, barbaqued seafood and a funfilled day for all to enjoy.
In late spring our Health Centre along with our partners in the Bella Bella region organizes a free children’s health fair. Children can have a vision, hearing and dental screening. There are games and activities for the whole family. We give each child from 0 - 6 years summer toys and balloons for taking part and offer healthy snacks throughout the day.
