Supporting Children & Families in the Powell River Region

ORCA Bus

The ORCA Bus is a mobile venue that delivers early learning programs throughout the Powell River area for children 0 to 6 years of age. The bus was developed to address the need for outreach early years programs. Research indicated that there were gaps in services and programs in several Powell River neighbourhoods – particularly the rural ones.

The ORCA Bus is an initiative of Success by 6® in partnership with the Powell River & District United Way and School District 47. ORCA stands for On the Road with Children’s Activities.

The Orca bus has been on the road since February 2009. Currently, the School District provides an outreach StrongStart program. An early childhood educator delivers a 2 hour play-based early childhood development program in neighbourhoods and communities throughout the Powell River area from Saltery Bay to Lund, including Texada Island. The ORCA Bus has become an integral part of the programming for children 0-6 and an accustomed sight in many Powell River neighbourhoods.

Aboriginal Engagement Team

Success By 6 recognizes the importance of culture, language, self-determination and self-government to the Sliammon First Nations and is working to enhance the lives of young children and their families. Success By 6 works with the members of the Sliammon Child Development Resource Centre and Tla’Amin Health to help strengthen community capacity, increase cultural awareness of Success By 6 partners, and promote awareness of the importance of the early years in the healthy development of children in the Sliammon community. Over the past 6 years, the Aboriginal Engagement Team (AET) has developed Cultural Theme Boxes, children’s books and CD’s in the Tla’Amin language, beautiful children’s Regalia for cultural dances as well has offered a variety of activities for children and families to enhance the knowledge of the Tla’Amin language and culture. Currently the goal is to develop a cultural Resource Library where the community can celebrate the Sliammon culture by sharing its treasures with children and parents.

Ages & Stages

Success By 6 contributes to “Ages and Stages”- an interactive preschool fun day that takes place at the Powell River Recreation Complex. It is a collaborative effort of the Building Blocks Committee 0-5; members are from agencies and services that serve the preschool population. Theme centres are set up on the top floor of the Complex. Preschoolers and their parents/caregivers enter and register for the event. At registration the family gets a book bag, a developmental questionnaire appropriate for the age of the child, and a map of the upper level of the complex showing where each centre is. Preschoolers and their parent/caregiver can choose the order they visit each centre. Centre themes include: Health/Hand-washing, Hearing/Vision/Dental, Communication, Social-Emotional/ Reading-Relaxation, Fine Motor/Problem-solving, Gross-motor and Nutrition. This event usually takes place in the spring.
